Well, I just got home from a wonderful evening with the M.O.M.S. group that some wonderful women from our church do for us. The ladies that host this for us have already "Been there..done that" and have been in our shoes. They provide a wonderful meal for us 4 times a year in their homes and will not let us lift a finger! We all look so forward to this time together! Tonight after our wonderful meal and visitation with each other Debra McCoy spoke to us. Debra has 3 sons, Colt McCoy (the quarterback for UT), Chance McCoy(a receiver at Abilene Christian) and Case McCoy a quarterback for our high school football team. I am just telling you...this family is amazing! I really think that Debra needs to write a book. She is so eloquent with her words and I just treasure everything that she says. I wanted to share some things with you that might be beneficial to you as parents. She really inspires me to want to be a better Christian parent. One thing that Debra shared with us was when one of her boys was going through some issues while in high school. She did not know what it was b/c she could not put her finger on it, but she went in his room numerous times when he was not home and read scripture aloud and got on her knees and prayed prayed prayed, She read scripture, she prayed scripture, and just poured her heart out to God. Her husband also did the same thing. They prayed together, they prayed individually, etc. She said that she has done this on several occasions with her children and God delivered them from those issues after doing this. She also said that her and her mother in law pray on every single football field that her kids play on. They walk over the field and pray together! So amazing! She also has a special bathroom stall at UT that she prays in every home game! :)
Another thing that she commented on was that she always remembered having breakfast every morning and seeing her mother's Bible open where she had been reading it every morning...early..before she got the kids up. Her mother never said anything, just lead by example. Debra did not comment on this, but I know that she has her quiet time early every morning also because I heard Brad (her husband) comment on it one time. She also recommended having a family scripture that is your "anchor". They have referred to their scripture for years and she said the original one actually has pizza sauce all over it. :) She also recommended saturating your home with scripture...mirrors, refrigerator, bedrooms, etc.
They also circle up and pray before every meal. At the end of their prayer they do a "triple kiss" where they all squeeze their faces together. She said that whenever they were having some pretty difficult discussions then the triple kiss kind of made everyone in a better mood...love it!
Debra mentioned they that you need to find a mentor for your kids. Maybe someone in the church or outside, but they need a good positive mentor. She had a mentor for her kids that she totally trusted when they needed a babysitter, needed to go out of town, etc. Her kids are still best of friends with this mentor today and he is such a Godly person and is now a coach for our high school football team!
I wish that I would have taken notes and was able to share everything that Debra talked about tonight. I hope this helps you because her talk certainly had a positive effect on me!

Mom
Wow that is so neat! I loved reading what she shared and how it spoke to you. She sounds like an incredible woman...although I hate to admit it, it somewhat makes me not hate Texas as much now knowing her-GO SOONERS!
Okay I got that out of my system...I so wish I could have been there to hear how she raised 3 boys whom all seem to be very stable, happy and christians! Thank you so much for sharing!
Sounds like a night of rejuvination! It is always nice to be encouraged by women who have already raised their children. Sometimes we just need a boost and sounds like you got that.
Thanks for sharing.
